There was so  much  that was special about this great lady.  She was a "once in a lifetime" dog.  Her untimely passing has left me bereft, but I am so grateful to have had those few short years with her as my friend...

Emma didn't join the family until she was a year old.

She was a  "kennel dog" before she came to live with us, but she very soon caught on to the pleasures (and requirements) of being a "house dog".

She was one of the smartest dogs that I have ever known, and I suspect that in terms of intelligence Emma could have been called a "Mensa Dog".

Always living to please, she learned so quickly how to be the perfect companion.  She never used her intelligence to be obnoxious like some dogs do.  She was never deliberately naughty - if she did something wrong it was because she didn't know any better - and once shown the error of her ways she never made the same mistake again.

Sweet natured, laid back, tolerant and always happy she was a wonderful companion.

In the house she was my unobtrusive shadow, following me from room to room but never getting underfoot.  When I worked on the computer she could always be found under the desk - a furry foot warmer!

Outside she was my "helper" - always nearby no matter the weather - always walking on the path not in the garden, even when on "squirrel patrol"...

She absolutely adored kids.  There were never any worries about this lady biting the grandchildren, though she did tend to be over exuberant with her affection and overdo the kisses.

When the neighbour's children were out playing in their yard she would sit at the fence and watch them - tail gently waving the whole time...

She loved to be outside if the weather was nice and she would happily spend the day in the yard, doing her regular  "squirrel patrol" and then coming to lie on the mat just outside the door.

She is the only dog I have ever known with the innate good sense to ask to come in if a skunk should happen to wander into the yard!  (Talk about  smart...)

She loved going in the car, and was happiest during the colder months when she could come with me when I went anywhere and was able to safely leave her in the car.

Always well behaved, she would curl up and sleep during long trips, or sit and look out the window on our shorter jaunts - never did she "trespass" into the front seat...

Her virtues were beyond counting - she was that greatest of all creatures - a wonderful dog...

She was a true and loving friend, a cheerful companion and the ever alert guardian of our home.

There will never be another like you, my Emma, my lady, my sweet and beautiful friend,
I miss you...
